Preparation

Prepare the room/space so that it is as spacious as it can be, without obstacles.

Step by step description

1. Ask participants to form several groups (depending on the total number of participants, but for each group to have 3 to 4 members). Explain to participants that their task is to create a choreography that incorporates the names of all group members and add a movement to it.

2. Encourage participants to integrate this choreography with the room in any way they want, using the space creatively. If there are any objects or specific features of the space, encourage them to use them. Give participants 10 minutes to create their choreography and rehearse it.

3. Invite each group, one by one, to perform. In order to get the performance started, the rest of groups observing should, together with the facilitator, say “1,2,3 Action!”.

The activity is concluded when all groups have presented their work.

Closing up

You can reflect jointly with the group on this exercise by asking the following questions:
During the exercise…
● What was easy?
● What was difficult?

Encourage participants to share their thoughts on the following aspects:

● The difficulty of coming up with an original idea.
● The ease of incorporating the scene into the choreography.
● The challenges of being in the spotlight and the fear of being observed by others.
● The difficulties and dynamics of working collectively in a group, where leadership roles may vary from one moment to the other.

Comments / hints for facilitators

The facilitator's primary role is to ensure the process runs smoothly and to be aware of the feedback and dynamics within the groups. Acknowledge that this type of creative process may not work the same way every time and that flexibility is key. Make sure to reassure and stress that participants are already creating something, hence engaging in a collective process and expressing their creativity regardless of the final result. Highlight that the purpose of this exercise is to encourage creative collaboration and to help participants understand the dynamics of working in a group. The discussion following the exercise can reveal valuable insights and provide opportunities for personal and group growth.
