Number of participants

10 to 15 participants

Objectives

● To enhance improvisations.

Where does the activity take place within the process (beginning, middle, end)

Middle

Duration

2 hours

Material needed

Selection of props, costumes, and perhaps musical instruments. These can serve as inspiration and tools for improvisations.

Preparation

Prepare the room/space so that it is as spacious as it can be, without obstacles.

Step by step description

1. Clearly outline any rules for the jam, including how to indicate when someone wants to enter or exit the performance space, and how to show support or propose new directions for the improvisation.

2. Decide if your jam will have a theme, prompt, or is completely open-ended. Themes can provide a unifying thread for the improvisations, while open-ended jams allow for complete creative freedom.

3. Participants step into the performance space as inspired, using props, their bodies, and voices to create scenes, stories, or abstract performances. Other participants can join in, add to the scene, or watch and react.

4. Theatrical Jams are dynamic. Encourage participants to follow the flow of creativity, allowing scenes to evolve naturally. Participants should be attentive to each other, building on or transforming the scenes organically.

Closing up

Reflection and Feedback: After the jam, gather everyone for a debrief. Discuss what worked well, what challenges arose, and share personal experiences and feelings about the process.

Comments / hints for facilitators

Theatrical Jams are an excellent way for individuals to explore their creativity, practise improvisational skills, and connect with others through the joy of spontaneous theatrical creation. Tips for success: - Encourage Support: Foster an environment of support and positivity. Applaud the efforts and creativity of all participants. - Yes, And...: Embrace the principle of "Yes, And..." where participants accept and build upon each other's ideas, fostering a collaborative and inclusive atmosphere. - Diversity of Expression: Welcome a variety of theatrical forms, including but not limited to spoken word, movement, mime, and musical improvisation. - Rotation and Inclusion: Encourage everyone to participate and take turns leading or supporting scenes to ensure all voices are heard and included. - Safe Space: Ensure the environment is safe and respectful for all participants. Establish clear guidelines about physical contact, themes, and language to maintain a comfortable space for creativity. Facilitator's role - Guide and Support: The facilitator should guide the session, offering prompts or themes if necessary, and ensure that the jam stays positive and productive. - Adaptability: Be prepared to adapt the structure based on the group's energy and dynamics. The facilitator might introduce new prompts or suggest a pause for reflection as needed. - Conflict Resolution: If conflicts arise, the facilitator should mediate and help resolve them constructively, ensuring the jam remains a positive experience for all.
